Reservation Era Begins 1850-1878

Chief Little Crow is murdered and his remains are desecrated
As Chief Little Crow and his son gather berries, Little Crow is shot and killed by Nathan Lamson and his son, while Little Crow’s son flees. A group of settlers return to the site of Little Crow’s body and scalp him and carry the body to a Fourth of July celebration, where it is further mutilated. Little Crow’s scalp is turned over to the authorities for a bounty and Lamson and his son receive over $500 from the State of Minnesota. Little Crow’s scalp is tanned and later displayed in the Adjutant General’s office. In 1868, it is donated to the Minnesota Historical Society, where Little Crow’s scalp, bones, and skull remain on exhibit through 1915. It is not until 1971 that his remains receive a proper burial in a family plot in South Dakota (Beaulieu, 1970).
